Pakistan vice-captain Misbah-ul-Haq has said that his team is practicing hard to counter Sri Lankan spinner Ajantha Mendis.Mendis, who recently became the fastest bowler in the world to claim 50 one day international wickets, will now be seen in action against Pakistan in a three-match ODI series. The first ODI between the two teams will take place tomorrow at Karachi but the Pakistan players are already gearing up to face spin-wizard Ajantha Mendis whom they have faced just once during the Asia Cup.During that encounter which took place in June last year, Mendis claimed match-winning figures of 4/47 as Sri Lanka defeated the hosts at the very same venue, Karachi. The Pakistan vice-captain has come up with strategic plans to attack the wily Mendis."We will definitely try to attack and unnerve him. It's in the mind. If you allow a bowler to dominate you, he will and if you don't, he won't. We saw him in the Asia Cup and even though he took four wickets, he went for a few runs," said Misbah.Asked how the Pakistan batsmen were working to counter Mendis’ pace, Misbah claimed that they were practicing on shorter pitches so that batsmen have less time to react to a faster ball, a method used by Imran Khan against the West Indies in 1987-88.
Many believe that it is Mendis’ pace off the pitch that makes him hard to play. Therefore Misbah said his team has adopted this alternate practice method to face the Lankan bowler.
"We are practicing a lot for Mendis. We're playing bowlers from shorter distances so we can counter the fast pace.”
“There is no reason why we cannot handle him because all Pakistan players are good against spin," said Misbah
