Australia skipper Ricky Ponting opted to bat first after winning the toss in the high profile first Test match here on Wednesday.
Ponting decision to bat first cost dear to the hosts on a bouncy Gabba wicket as South African pace spear head Makhaya Ntini struck in the third over to claim two successive wickets.
Matthew Hayden, who has been not in his best of form of late, fell first after he was caught by skipper Graeme Smith. Skipper Ricky Ponting was the next man to go in the next delivery as Australia were reduced to 14 for two.
Steyn complimented Ntini from the other end to get rid of Michael Hussey soon. Hussey was also caught by de Villiers before he could open his account.
That brought Michael Clarke in to the middle with Simon Katich. The duo have already added above 100 runs, recovering the hosts
