NEWZELAND VS WESTINDIES 1st TEST 2008:-LATEST UPDATES

Jesse Ryder made 89 while West Indies’ quick’s Jerome Taylor and Fidel Edwards shared six wickets as New Zealand's heavily disrupted third innings reached 365 on day three of the first Test on Saturday.

New Zealand resumed on its first day total of 226-4, having lost the equivalent of five intervening sessions to rain and bad light, and pushed on to 365 thanks to Ryder and some mild late order resistance.

At stumps, delayed until 8pm, the West Indies were 39-0 in their first innings in reply, with Chris Gayle 29 not out and Sewnarine Chattergoon on 9. The West Indies openers did well to see their team to stumps without loss in gathering gloom and bitter cold.

Ryder came within two runs of his highest score, in sight of a maiden Test century, before falling to Powell and to one of the ill-judged shots which has marred his short Test career.

He passed through alternate periods of command and uncertainty before playing a wooden pull shot which scooped the ball from Powell to Shivnarine Chanderpaul at square leg. Ryder batted for over four hours and hit 12 fours, including several sweetly timed cover drives.

Powell (3-68) claimed New Zealand's first wicket on the opening day and returned in damaging spells on Saturday to dismiss Ryder and Daniel Vettori (30), New Zealand's last specialist batsman.

Edwards (3-91) bowled poorly on the first day but became more effective with the second new ball, capturing the wickets of James Franklin (7), Kyle Mills (12) and Iain O'Brien (4) to wrap up the New Zealand tail.

Chris Gayle took 3-42 and Daniel Flynn made 95 on the distant first day, cut short by bad light and separated from Saturday's events by an entire day lost to rain.

Damp ground conditions prevented play in the morning session Saturday, compounding problems caused on the first two days by rain and bad light. More than an hour was lost on the first day Thursday when bad light curtailed the final session and the second day was lost entirely to rain.
Ryder resumed at 54 not out Saturday and put on 89 runs with his overnight partner Brendon McCullum before the New Zealand wicketkeeper was out for 25.

All-rounder James Franklin (7), returning to New Zealands' team after an 18-month absence through injury, was partially a victim of the conditions when he slipped and trod on his own stumps, falling hit wicket to Edwards.

Four decisions - three by the West Indies and one by New Zealand - were referred to television umpire Rudi Koertzen Saturday under the Umpiring Referral System being trialed in this series.

Koertzen found cause to reverse only one decision, giving out Kyle Mills lbw for 12 after he had previously been ruled not out by Indian umpire Amiesh Saheba. Ryder and Chattergoon survived reviews of lbw decisions while Gillespie survived a reviewed appeal for a catch down the leg side .
