PAKISTAN VS SRILANKA 2nd ODI:SRILANKA LEVEL THE SERIES WITH A BIG MARGIN VICTORY

After the eight-wicket loss a day before, Sri Lanka resurged with an emphatic 129-run win against Pakistan in the second ODI on Tuesday to square the series 1-1.After Sri Lanka were powered by Tillekaratne Dilshan (71) and Thilina Kandamby (59) to 290-8, the Pakistan chase fell apart at the halfway mark with the wickets of Shoaib Malik (54) and Salman Butt (62).The home side were bowled out for a paltry 161 in 34.5 overs with their last seven wickets falling in 10 overs for only 31 runs.Pakistan were off to a disastrous start losing three wickets within the first four overs for 17 runs. Khurram Manzoor (one), Younis Khan (four) and Misbah-ul-Haq (one) fell cheaply.Butt and Malik breathed life to the Pakistan chase with a 108 runs stand which came in only 21 overs. Malik was the more aggressive one, slamming five boundaries and one six in his 52-ball 54.Muttiah Muralitharan got Lanka the much needed breakthrough when Malik edged one to wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara in an attempt to play a delicate shot. Butt top edged a Sanath Jayasuriya delivery six balls later to perish for 62, leaving the lower order a steep task. The Pakistan innings then fell like a pack of cards. Kamran Akmal (six) and Shahid Afridi (14) were the home team's only hope but the duo failed to come up with anything special. The Pakistan innings was folded up with more than 15 overs to spare. After the visitors were put in to bat by Malik, a brisk start was followed by an early wicket with Jayasuriya falling hit wicket in the seventh over for 19. Lanka's mainstay Sangakkara was run out for 16 in the 12th over and the tourists were in a spot of bother at 66-2.

The innings was revived by Dilshan and Kandamby with a 99-run stand. The partnership was taking dangerous proportions when Shoaib Akhtar snared Dilshan after the stand-in opener smashed 11 boundaries in his 88-ball knock. The Lankan innings in the death overs was powered by Chamara Kapugedera's 39-ball 44 that included two fours and two sixes.

Today is the 10-year anniversary of the notorious ODI in Adelaide where Emerson no-balled Murali, Ranatunga walked off the field and then Jayawardene made his first ODI century after Emerson gave him not out without calling for the video replay when he was run out!

Emerson was a rubbish umpire but I think he inadvertently gave Jayawardene's career a jump-start

At least his umpiring career achieved something then

A look back http://monkeyatthecricket.blogspot.com/2009/01/rewind-1999-birth-of-jayawardene.html
